The reported interrogation of social activist Swapnesh Sherlekar by the Panjim Police over remarks made in a YouTube video raises serious concerns about freedom of expression in Goa. Activists who question the government and expose issues after detailed research should not be intimidated through police complaints and political pressure. If criticism of opposition leaders is defended as free speech, then citizens and activists must also have the democratic right to question those in power. Public figures, including Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, have often made strong remarks against political opponents and historical leaders. The same standard of free speech should apply to everyone. Many Goans today are deeply worried about the large-scale destruction of the state through hill-cutting, deforestation, illegal land conversions and mega-projects that threaten Goa’s fragile ecology and identity. These concerns cannot simply be dismissed as anti-government rhetoric. Instead of targeting activists, the government should address the genuine issues being raised. Goans must stand united in supporting voices that speak up for the protection of the state and the interests of future generations.
