United Boys of Ambaulim clinched the United Trophy, organised by United Club of Telaulim, after defeating Betalbatim Sporting Club 5-4 via a penalty shootout in the final played at Rosary Church ground, Navelim, on Sunday.
The summit clash began on a high note, with a large crowd of football enthusiasts turning up to witness the contest. Both teams played competitive football but failed to break the deadlock during regulation time, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
In the tie-breaker, United Boys of Ambaulim held their nerve and proved to be the better side, converting their chances to emerge champions.
Former Goa Chief Minister Churchill Alemao graced the occasion as chief guest and presented the prizes. He was joined by Adv. Valanka Alemao, Chairperson of the AIFF Women’s Committee, Fr. Gabriel Coutinho, Parish Priest of Navelim Church, ZP member Malifa Cardozo, social worker Savio Alemao, Davorlim Sarpanch Minino Colaco, former GFA executive member Prakash Dessai, along with club members and other dignitaries.
Individual awards were also presented: Declan Carvalho (Betalbatim) was named first scorer of the final; Ashley Fernandes (Betalbatim) won Best Defender; Ibon Fernandes (Ambaulim) was adjudged Best Goalkeeper; Savlon Fernandes (Ambaulim) received the Best Half award; Cyril Dias (Ambaulim) was named Best Forward; and Jaslon Fernandes (Ambaulim) was declared Man of the Match.
