I write to highlight the disturbing rise of India-based scam call centres that target international victims, particularly in the US and UK. There was a time when South Africa was infamous for duping people worldwide with fake lottery email scams. Unfortunately India has now taken over that dubious distinction with multiple frauds: Amazon refund scams, fake Microsoft tech support, impersonation of FBI officers and parcel delivery scams. Several social media videos have exposed these operations. However, they are now mushrooming even in Goa. Being a tourist state it is extremely difficult to keep tabs on such activities because police verification is not mandated for short-term rentals. Even in long-term rentals, despite police verification, such centres continue to operate. As claimed by the Porvorim Welfare Foundation it is deeply concerning that these operations function with the blessings of politicians. I urge the Central and State governments, law enforcement agencies, and telecom authorities to act decisively. This includes mandatory police verification for all rentals, strict action against landlords and local officials who enable these setups and fast-track prosecution of those arrested.
