NEET paper leak: Stronger remedies needed

The cancellation of the NEET 2026 examination on May 12 has once again exposed the serious consequences of paper leaks and administrative failures. While the National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a re-examination, waived additional fees, and promised refunds for the earlier test conducted on May 3, these measures alone are inadequate to address the enormous emotional, academic, and financial burden faced by nearly 22 lakh students. Months of preparation, travel expenses, coaching costs, and mental stress cannot simply be erased through a fee refund. Students have lost valuable time and suffered severe anxiety due to the uncertainty surrounding their future. Therefore, accountability must extend beyond merely conducting another examination. Compensation for affected students should be recovered directly from the salaries, assets, and properties of officials and individuals found responsible for the paper leak and related negligence. Such strict action would send a strong message and help prevent repetition of these incidents in future examinations. Students, parents, and organisations such as SFI and ABVP are rightly demanding stronger legal and institutional remedies. Public Interest Litigations in the Supreme Court and High Courts may become necessary to ensure accountability and justice.
