Govt directed to detail steps taken on awareness of senior citizen schemes

The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday directed the State government to place on record the steps taken to create awareness among senior citizens about various welfare schemes introduced for them.

The direction came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Moses Pinto seeking directions to the authorities to conduct a comprehensive statewide socio-economic and health survey of senior citizens residing in Goa and place the data in the public domain within a stipulated time frame.

The Vacation Bench of Justice Jitendra Jain directed the State to incorporate details regarding awareness measures in its affidavit in reply. The court ordered that the affidavit be served by May 30 and posted the matter for further hearing on June 9.

In his petition, Pinto also urged the High Court to direct the authorities to utilise the findings of the proposed survey for drafting new welfare schemes or amending existing schemes for the benefit of senior citizens in the State.
