In this new economy with easy access, large-scale employment opportunities are being created for urban and migrant youth.  According to NITI Aayog’s report “India’s Booming Gig and Platform Economy” (2022), there were around 7.7 million gig workers in the country in 2020“21. This number is expected to triple to 23.5 million by 2029“30.The state government has decided to establish a National Social Security Board for the welfare of gig and digital platform workers, which is expected to benefit at least one million gig workers associated with around 350 digital platforms. It is essential to ensure effective and robust implementation of the Code on Social Security, 2020 at the state level. Registration of gig workers with the central system is also necessary. There is a need to develop infrastructure for gig workers. A separate board will also be established for workers in the unorganized sector. Through this board, welfare schemes, public provident fund, healthcare, and housing schemes will be implemented. While these measures appear promising, the key question remains when they will be implemented in reality, as this will ultimately determine the future of gig workers.
