The Goa Tourism Department’s new campaign, the Goa Shackathon scheduled for May 21“22, aims to transform beach shacks into tech-enabled hubs for remote workers, digital nomads, and creators. While the vision of blending beachside relaxation with high-speed, productive work environments is appealing, I hope those behind this initiative have conducted a thorough feasibility study. Firstly, tech work requires uninterrupted electricity and uninterrupted, high-speed internet. Can shacks guarantee the uptime that client calls and cloud work demand? Secondly, there is the issue of safety. Goa has seen a series of thefts involving electronic items. The tech field requires expensive equipment and ensuring its safety is critical. Thirdly, the target audience itself is limited. Very few salaried employees in Indian firms have a formal work-from-anywhere policy. Most organisations serve international clients and data protection laws mandate strict residential verification and secure networks. This is achievable with work-from-home setups but difficult with work-from-remote locations like beach shacks. Lastly, India faces a serious challenge with digital scams. India now outranks Nigeria in reported scam operations and is often cited as a top source of cyber fraud.
