The upcoming Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) elections promise to be a closely fought contest between the BJP panel led by Atanasio “Babush” Monserrate and the opposition panel “Ami Panjekar” headed by seven-time unbeaten former mayor Surendra Furtado, with the support of Utpal Parrikar. While Babush has hinted at a clean sweep, the opposition remains confident of victory in several wards. With around 32,000 voters spread across 30 wards, each ward has roughly 1,100 voters, making margins of victory extremely narrow. Local influence of candidates will play a decisive role. Several civic issues are likely to shape the voters’ decision. The delayed sewerage project executed by IPSCDL, which caused road digging, hardships, and even accidents, remains a major concern. Similarly, the incomplete St Inez creek rejuvenation project has disappointed citizens. Other key issues include the continued presence of offshore casinos in the Mandovi, monsoon flooding in low-lying areas like Patto, Mala and 18th June Road, neglect of public gardens, and unresolved matters at the Panaji market complex. Ultimately, the voters will decide on March 11, with results on March 13 revealing the new council.
