Social media influence fueling indiscipline among tourists, to be dealt with strictly: Goa Min

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has said the influence of social media has created a perception among some young tourists that they can behave without restraint while visiting Goa. Speaking during the Question Hour, the minister warned that such conduct will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against offenders.

"There have been instances where young tourists, while visiting the beaches, take selfies with foreign visitors and end up causing them inconvenience. Such behaviour tarnishes the image of the state and will be dealt with firmly," he said on the floor of the House.

Khaunte also stated the issue was discussed with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, and steps are being taken to strengthen enforcement at beach locations.

As part of the measures, additional personnel from the Tourism Police Unit (TPU) will be deployed in coordination with local police stations to maintain stricter vigilance on beaches. He added that continuous action, including arrests where necessary, is being taken against those violating the law.

"Instructions have been issued to increase the number of women constables in the TPU to strengthen safety and security monitoring. Goa’s name cannot be spoiled because of such behaviour,” the minister said.
