PANAJI: Goa has begun consultations to frame a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy, with the State government engaging stakeholders from government, industry, and academia to shape a framework for responsible AI adoption.
The consultation, organised by the Department of Information Technology, Electronics & Communications (DITE&C), was held at Paryatan Bhavan and chaired by IT Minister Rohan Khaunte.
Officials, technology experts, industry bodies, and representatives of academic institutions participated in the meeting, while representatives from national AI initiatives and technology firms joined virtually.
Addressing the gathering, Khaunte said the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence presents significant opportunities for governance, innovation, and economic growth.
“Artificial Intelligence is rapidly emerging as a key driver of innovation, governance, and economic growth. Goa must proactively adopt forward-looking policies to harness the transformative potential of AI while ensuring that its benefits reach every section of society,” he said.
Referring to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on democratising Artificial Intelligence, the minister said technology must remain accessible and inclusive.
“AI must empower citizens, strengthen governance, and support inclusive development. Goa’s AI policy will focus on responsible adoption while fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and technological growth within the State,” Khaunte added.
During the consultation, stakeholders discussed priority sectors where AI could strengthen governance and public service delivery, including tourism, agriculture, healthcare, education, and e-governance. Participants also underlined the need to build a strong ecosystem for AI research, startups, skill development, and industry collaboration.
Representatives from Sarvam AI and the IndiaAI Mission shared insights on emerging trends in AI and highlighted the importance of developing indigenous capabilities in the technology sector.
The meeting also discussed the development of AI tools in regional languages, including the possibility of creating a Konkani Large Language Model in collaboration with initiatives such as Bhashini to improve accessibility for citizens.
Officials said the draft AI policy for Goa has already been circulated among stakeholders for feedback. Further consultations will be held in the coming weeks before the policy framework is finalised.
The proposed policy will align with the State’s Goa AI Mission 2027, which aims to strengthen digital governance, promote innovation and create new opportunities in emerging technologies.
