PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao launched a sharp attack on the BJP government ahead of the State Budget, claiming that the financial statement being presented would be the party’s last in Goa.
Speaking to reporters before day 1 of the Assembly Session today, Alemao alleged that people of the State would vote the BJP out of power for what he described as arrogance, anti-people projects, and “atrocities on democracy”.
“Today’s budget will be the last budget of the BJP government. People of Goa will never give them power again for ruining our State and will show them the door for their arrogance, anti-people projects and atrocities on democracy,” he said.
The Leader of the Opposition criticised the government’s financial management, claiming it had failed to rein in borrowings and rising debt.
“This government has miserably failed to control borrowings and repay debt. It gives hollow promises and spends taxpayers’ money on events for commission,” Alemao said.
He further accused the government of diverting attention from key governance issues and urged it to address what he called systemic problems within the administration.
“Instead of diverting issues, the government should focus on tackling corruption at the ministerial and administrative level, conversions of land under Section 39A, shifting of casinos, and controlling public borrowing while reducing public debt,” Alemao said.
Alemao also outlined what he said would be Congress’s priorities if voted to power in the State.
“After coming to power, Congress will focus on employment in the industry and service sectors, education for skills and employability, ease of business and ease of citizens, and protection and preservation of the environment,” he said.
The Opposition leader also criticised the State government over alleged threats by a minister to mobilise large numbers of people in the capital.
“A minister in the BJP cabinet has openly threatened to paralyse the capital city by bringing 40,000 people from Sattari. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant remains mum on such threats; he files FIRs against common people when they protest for their rights,” Alemao said.
“This makes it evident how the State cabinet is functioning and shows how law and order have collapsed in the State,” he added.
