SANGUEM
Residents of Orcotto in Sanguem have bitterly complained about the rampant dumping of both dry and wet waste in the locality by people allegedly from outside the municipal limits, resulting in a nauseating stench and unhygienic conditions in the area.
Locals expressed frustration over the issue, claiming that despite repeated complaints to the municipal authorities, no concrete action has been taken so far.
The unattended garbage pile has also attracted stray dogs, which scatter the waste across the surroundings, further worsening the situation.
A local, Milton Fernandes, stated that the unbearable stench and filth are severely affecting the lives of at least two to three households located adjacent to the dumping spot.
Adding to the concern, locals warned that the waste is on the verge of entering a nearby Nullah where several residents traditionally wash clothes and use the water for domestic purposes. Local residents fear that contamination of the water source could lead to serious health and environmental hazards if immediate steps are not taken.
Fernandes informed that during the tenure of Luis, a former municipal supervisor, cleanliness in the locality was maintained efficiently and such issues were addressed promptly.
The residents have now appealed to the present chief officer, engineers, and administrator of Sanguem Municipal Council to personally intervene and ensure that the garbage is cleared without further delay.
Locals also pointed out the contradiction between the government’s vigorous promotion of the “Swachh Bharat” campaign and the ground reality prevailing at this tourist-frequented spot.
They termed the condition as a reflection of absolute neglect and demanded that the administration take responsibility and restore cleanliness in the area immediately.
