MARGAO Contamination of the Colva Creek has resurfaced, drawing sharp criticism from residents and activists after stagnant, black-coloured water was observed in the water body on Sunday.
Social worker Warren Alemao lashed out at authorities, accusing them of failing to address the issue despite it persisting for years. Describing the condition of the creek as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable”, Alemao said the once vital natural asset has deteriorated due to neglect, unchecked pollution, and poor maintenance. “This is not just an environmental issue ” it is a public health concern and a direct reflection of failed responsibility,” he said, warning that continued inaction could have serious consequences for local communities.
Alemao also targeted Venzy Viegas, demanding accountability from the elected representative. “The people of the Benaulim constituency deserve answers, concrete action, and a clear plan to restore and protect Colva Creek. Silence and inaction cannot continue,” he added.
Highlighting the lack of long-term solutions, Alemao pointed out that authorities, including the Water Resources Department (WRD), have largely relied on issuing tenders for periodic clean-up operations rather than addressing the root causes of contamination. “Despite repeated tenders to clean the creek, the problem remains unresolved. What is needed is a permanent and sustainable solution,” he said.
Colva Creek has been plagued by pollution attributed to sewage discharge, waste dumping, and poor water flow management.
Residents and environmental groups have repeatedly raised concerns about foul odour, water stagnation, and discoloration. Authorities have intermittently undertaken desilting and clean-up drives, but critics argue these measures have failed to deliver lasting results.
With the latest incident triggering fresh outrage, calls are growing louder for a comprehensive restoration plan that addresses sewage inflow, improves water circulation, and ensures regular monitoring to prevent further degradation of the creek.
