MARGAO
In another major project announced for Margao in his budget speech, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the redevelopment of the Margao bus terminal will be implemented under the Public Private Partnership model this financial year.
He further said the implementation of the redevelopment of Margao, Mapusa and Vacso bus terminals will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 745 crore.
This Chief Minister’s announcement on the redevelopment of the Margao bus terminals assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact that the government had floated a tender in September 2025 for the redevelopment, operation and maintenance and transfer of Margao bus terminal in Margao on Public Private Partnership.
The existing Margao bus stand, spread across 67,600 sq, has acted as a primary gateway for intercity and intrastate buses. The bus stand plays a crucial role in connecting Margao not only to major cities within Goa like Panaji, Vasco da Gama, and Mapusa but also to interstate destinations such as Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The tender document stated that despite its historical significance as one of the oldest bus terminals, Margao’s central terminal faces challenges in meeting the increasing demands of the population and vehicular traffic alongside issues such as limited passenger facilities, and outdated amenities.
The Transport Department had proposed to undertake modernisation and complete re-development, operation and maintenance of the existing bus terminal at Margao, through Public Private Partnership on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (the “DBFOT”) model.
The project shall involve development of Bus Terminal Facilities and Commercial Complex at the project site. The redevelopment is envisaged to accommodate bus bays, depot, parking, fuel station, workshop unit, departure and halting areas, passenger terminal, etc for operating regulated or obligatory bus services owned and controlled by KTC, other state road transport corporations (under any arrangement or agreement supported by adequate platforms), private agencies, and other ancillary infrastructure and amenities, including and commercial developments as applicable under the governing bye laws and zoning regulations.
It has proposed to combine the bus terminal facilities with permitted commercial development to make the Project commercially viable.
