In a move aimed at boosting employment opportunities for Goans in the private sector, the State government has proposed to introduce an Employment Subsidy Scheme through the Goa Human Resource Development Corporation (GHRDC), under which it will provide gap funding in salaries for selected candidates for a period of three years to encourage industries to hire local youth.
Under the scheme, the government will provide gap funding for three years between the actual salary paid by GHRDC and the salary offered by companies to selected candidates, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said, adding that the initiative aims to encourage private sector firms to hire more local youth.
In another measure aimed at strengthening welfare for workers, the government said it is in the process of fully implementing the Unorganised Workers’ Social Security Act, 2008 to ensure social security benefits for workers in the unorganised sector.
Further, Sawant also revealed that the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Corporation will establish a medical college in South Goa, with 50 per cent of the seats reserved for Goans.
Presenting the proposals, the government said the new medical college will significantly improve access to medical education and enhance healthcare facilities for the people.
The government also announced plans to launch an “e-Market Portal” as a single unified marketplace for the State’s unorganised sector. The portal, which is expected to be rolled out this year, is aimed at creating new economic opportunities and increasing employment for Goans.
