After gap of year, locals set to celebrate Curdi zatra Locals and temple committees have begun preparations for the annual zatra of Lord Someshwar at Curdi scheduled on May 24.

SANGUEM

Preparations have begun for the annual zatra of Lord Someshwar at Curdi in Sanguem taluka, which will be celebrated on May 24 with traditional religious fervour and large public participation.

The annual zatra, which holds deep religious and cultural significance for devotees from Sanguem and surrounding areas, could not be celebrated last year owing to the early onset of the monsoon.

The historic temple, which remains submerged under water for most part of the year, continued to stay underwater even during the last week of May when the annual festival is traditionally observed, making it impossible to organise the customary celebrations.

However, despite the temple remaining submerged, a handful of devotees along with the temple priest had last year performed the traditional pooja rituals at the site, keeping alive the age-old customs and devotion associated with the shrine.

It is pertinent to note that the Someshwar temple at Curdi emerges and becomes accessible only during a brief period in the last week of May when the water level recedes sufficiently, allowing devotees to visit the temple and conduct the annual Zatra.

With favourable conditions this year, locals and temple committees have now intensified preparations for the celebration scheduled on May 24.

The annual gathering traditionally attracts a large number of devotees and visitors who assemble to offer prayers and participate in the religious ceremonies and festivities connected with the zatra of Lord Someshwar.
