Flaming Oranje begin I-League 2 campaign today at Bambolim

PANAJI

Sporting Clube de Goa will begin their I-League 2 campaign on Saturday with a home clash against United Sports Club at the Bambolim Athletic Stadium, with the Flaming Oranje aiming to capitalise on home conditions and set an early marker in front of the Goan faithful.

Head coach Fernando Varela made his intent clear ahead of the opener, stating that his side will look to assert an attacking identity from the outset while maintaining defensive discipline.

“We want to impose our attacking style of play,” Varela said. “But we must also accept that we won’t have possession all the time. In those moments, we have to be prepared defensively and be aggressive in winning the ball back.”

The fixture assumes added importance as Sporting begin their campaign at home, with expectations high around a squad that has undergone a structured two-month pre-season under Varela’s supervision. The coach expressed confidence in the group’s readiness, both physically and tactically, while underlining the broader objective of restoring the club’s standing in Indian football.

“We’ve had a thorough pre-season, with a competitive mindset and, above all, a real desire to restore Sporting Clube de Goa to its rightful place,” he noted.

Sporting’s squad has seen a mix of experienced recruits and emerging talent integrated into the system, a balance Varela believes will be crucial over the course of the campaign.

“We’ve brought in players with a wealth of experience in Indian football, along with young players who show great potential. We want to be a dynamic team,” he said.

Beyond tactical preparation, Varela has placed emphasis on instilling a strong mentality within the group, linking performance on the pitch with discipline and responsibility off it.

“A winning mentality is something I enjoy fostering. It’s about hard work in every aspect, discipline off the pitch, and being mindful of the club we represent. We will give our all to represent Sporting Clube de Goa with integrity,” he added, referencing the legacy associated with the club.
