MARGAO

FC Siolim emerged champions after edging past St Anthony SC Assolda 8-7 via tie-breakers following a thrilling 1-1 draw in regulation time in the final played at the SAG Ground, Colva.

The match came alive after the break as St Anthony SC Assolda increased the pressure in search of the opening goal, while FC Siolim looked dangerous on swift counter-attacks and moves down the flanks. Assolda eventually broke the deadlock through Sunny Fernandes, sparking celebrations among their supporters.

FC Siolim, however, responded strongly as Lavnay Shirodkar rose above the defence to head home the equaliser and bring his side back into the contest.

With neither team able to score the winner in regulation time, the final was decided through a dramatic tie-breaker. FC Siolim kept their composure under pressure to prevail 8-7 and lift the coveted trophy.

Venzy Viegas, MLA of Benaulim constituency, attended the final as chief guest, while Dr Caetano Fernandes, president of the Goa Football Association, was the guest of honour. Both dignitaries later distributed the prizes along with other guests.
