There is a shortage of doctors, nurses and paramedics in public hospitals including the State’s premier health institution, the Goa Medical College and Hospital. GMC is facing extreme patient pressure, leading to long delays for essential services. The basic manpower at the South Goa District Hospital is yet to match its enhanced bed capacity. With several road accident cases and other emergencies arriving at this department, and hundreds of other patients requiring admission every day, doctors, nurses, and other staff of the hospital are feeling the pressure. The inadequacy of the existing budget has led to a myriad of unsolved issues, ultimately compromising the health and well-being of the citizens of Goa. The government should upgrade the South Goa District Hospital to match GMC standards, reducing the need for patient transfers. The GMC orthopedic department frequently deals with a high, constant influx of patients often leading to long wait times and a lack of available seating for patients, including those with fractures and mobility issues. Health centres in rural areas should be equipped with infrastructure and specialists. Mobile clinics should be used to reach people who live in the hinterlands.
