Consumers panic, rush to book LPG cylinders

CANACONA

Fears of a shortage of LPG cylinders sparked off panic in Canacona, as consumers rushed to the lone HP gas agency at Chaudi-Canacona to book LPG cylinders on Thursday.

Despite four LPG cylinder supply vehicles on regular home delivery visits in Canacona taluka, a large number of domestic consumers made a beeline to physically book and obtain gas cylinders at the Prabhudesai Gas Service.

A long queue was seen even before the shop was opened on Thursday morning, and the line swelled as the day progressed with the agency issuing over 400 gas cylinders on Thursday itself.

This is besides the four vehicles going on regular home delivery to the respective areas on the designated days. On Thursday,  around 250 cylinders were issued to the consumers in home delivery vehicles.

According to the agency, people are unnecessarily panicking are are buying as many cylinders as possible, unnecessarily putting pressure even as there is regular stock supply and there is no shortage of domestic gas cylinders with the agency in Canacona.

"We had personally explained to the people standing in queues to book gas cylinders at our outlet, informing them there is no need to go on unnecessary panic buying as there is no shortage of cylinders in our godown. Also, our stock of cylinders is very regular. Even today, we received the delivery of the stock,” informed Pratish Prabudesai from Prabhudesai Gas agency.

“Just to tide over the situation, the government is focusing more on domestic cylinders and has put a temporary hold on commercial cylinders, but hospitals and institutions are issued cylinders on a regular basis.”

Added a source in the Prabhudesai Gas agency, “A 25-day capping period is being enforced to issue domestic gas cylinders to stop hoarding due to panic buying, but people also tend to book domestic gas cylinders within five days of buying the cylinder.”
