According to Water Minister Subash Phal Dessai, there is a drinking water shortfall of 62 MLD (million litres per day) in Goa. To add to the shortfall are the heavy losses of drinking water in the ageing water distribution system due to frequent pipe bursts, leakages, and pilferage. Under these circumstances, why does the Goa government keep promising 24x7 drinking water in every home when, according to Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao, there is neither ‘Jal nor nal’ in some parts of Goa?
On the other hand, drinking water connections are given liberally to mega housing projects, while many houses in Goa receive drinking water for only two hours at low pressures and flow that is insufficient to fill the underground storage tanks. All this reflects the State government’s water department’s poor planning and functioning, to say the least.
