As Goa inches closer to the 2027 Assembly elections, the political mood in the State is increasingly marked by uncertainty due to the visible cracks within the Opposition ranks.
What was once seen as a promising possibility by the voters, is now beginning to look more like wishful thinking. Inside the Assembly, Opposition parties demonstrated a semblance of coordination, raising key issues and attempting to corner the government collectively.
However, outside the Assembly, the reality is starkly different. The latest flashpoint is the Leader of the Opposition’s controversial remarks describing Goa Forward Party (GFP) chief as “Judas” and a “setter”.
This has reignited tensions between two key Opposition players and also deepened mistrust at a crucial juncture, particularly with the Ponda by-election on the horizon. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already announced its candidate for the Ponda by-election. The stand of the Revolutionary Goan Party (RGP) is yet to be made known.
Such actions weaken the idea of a united Opposition front. The Opposition parties seem to be displaying egos and conflicting strategies. This diminishes the credibility of the opposition as a viable governing alternative.
The time to act is now. Or else, the dream of opposition unity will remain just that”a dream.
