The All Goa Lorry Owners Association (AGLOA) has placed several long-pending issues before the government. Among these are: removal of border check posts, stricter enforcement against overloading, and the introduction of cashless systems at transport checkpoints. As per the memorandum submitted to the Director of Transport, the Transport Minister and the Chief Minister, if the demands of AGLOA are not addressed within 15 days, then they will protest at the check posts.
In 2021, the Central government advised the State to review and remove border check posts, but the Goa government has not done so, unlike Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Why was this done? If the check posts are removed, how will the authorities know what goods are transported and their origin and destination?
In 2005, the Supreme Court mandated strict enforcement against overloading. But according to the AGLOA, the authorities are reluctant to act. When lorry owners are aware of the Court’s ruling, then while booking and loading consignments, how are lorries being overloaded? Why put the onus on the authorities? As per AGLOA, digital payments are operated by the regional Transport Offices, but check posts function on cash. Since they now demand the removal of the check posts, there is no question of any payments “ by cash or digital means.
