The taxi situation in Goa continues to be problematic despite efforts to introduce a draft digital taxi policy. Tourists often face very high fares, with even short trips costing Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000. There is also ongoing tension between local taxi unions and app-based services such as GoaMiles. I fail to understand why some taxi drivers demand tips from guests. If the service is good, customers will tip on their own. Tips should never be demanded. The strong-arm tactics of taxi associations outside hotels will not be tolerated. Tourists need to reach their destinations on time, but such behaviour sometimes causes delays and even missed flights, leading to significant losses.
The taxi issue has troubled Goa for many years and still remains unresolved despite repeated complaints. We need experienced Goan drivers who can speak Konkani, English and Hindi, rather than outsiders who may not be familiar with the local roads or languages. In addition, taxis must be clean, well-maintained and comfortable. It is time for the government to enforce a single fixed fare for all taxi associations and put an end to the harassment of tourists, ensuring a fair and pleasant travel experience in Goa.
