A delegation of Ponjekars Against Casinos met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at his residence, where he reportedly assured them that no new offshore casino vessel would be allowed to enter the Mandovi River. The vessel in question is said to be about 112 metres long and capable of accommodating around 2,000 passengers. Members of the delegation, however, sought a written assurance and said their agitation would continue until one is provided. The issue of casino ships operating in the Mandovi has been a matter of public debate for several years, with some residents of Panaji and other parts of Goa expressing concern over congestion and the long-term impact on the riverfront.
In the past, Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate, the MLA from Panaji, had said that the casino vessels would be shifted out of the Mandovi within 100 days of his election. However, the ships continue to operate on the river. For now, the Chief Minister’s verbal assurance has offered some hope to those opposing additional vessels entering the Mandovi. Whether the assurance translates into policy or formal action remains to be seen in the coming months.
