The announcement of the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) Journalism Awards for 2023, 2024 and 2025 has once again highlighted the contribution of journalists working across different fields such as investigative reporting, environmental journalism, art and culture, and public affairs. Yet, amid the recognition, one important category remains absent, namely ‘Citizen Journalism’. In recent years, citizen journalists have emerged as an important pillar of information-sharing in society. They have no background in journalism, but armed with smartphone and a sense of civic responsibility, ordinary citizens are often the first to report various incidents. In villages and remote areas where mainstream media may not immediately reach, local residents often become the first source of information. Whether it is highlighting poor road conditions, illegal garbage dumping, water shortages, environmental violations or public grievances, citizens have consistently used print and digital platforms to create awareness and demand accountability. Despite this important contribution, citizen journalists remain outside the formal framework of recognition. While professional journalism continues to remain the backbone of credible reporting, citizen journalism complements it by expanding coverage and increasing public participation in democratic processes.  Their efforts deserve appreciation and encouragement.
