In a fresh development in the case surrounding the controversial remarks against St Francis Xavier, Adv Amey Prabhudesai counsel for Madhav Khattar on Wednesday refuted police claims that he had authored the script for the speech delivered by his brother, Gautam Khattar.

Addressing the media, the counsel asserted that Madhav had no role in drafting the speech and maintained that Gautam was fully capable of preparing and delivering his own address. “Madhav has not written any script. Gautam is capable enough to speak as he wishes,” the counsel said.

The defence further alleged procedural lapses in Madhav’s arrest, claiming that police failed to produce a warrant or transit remand when bringing him to Goa.

“His arrest was totally illegal. He unnecessarily had to spend seven days in jail,” the counsel stated.

Emphasising Madhav’s limited involvement, the lawyer said the 18-year-old had travelled to Goa purely for tourism and had merely accompanied his brother.

“He has no role in the controversy. He has nothing to do with the organisers and cannot face the media at this time,” the counsel added.

The counsel also claimed that Madhav was detained as a substitute for his brother. “It is clear Madhav was arrested because they could not get Gautam,” he said.

Madhav Khattar, who had been lodged at Colvale jail, was granted bail on Tuesday and was released on Wednesday.
