PANAJI

The country’s first-ever fully digital census will commence on April 1 with the launch of self-enumeration for houselisting in Goa, with Konkani language being included for the first time in the process.

The self-enumeration window will remain open till April 15, enabling households to submit their details online through a dedicated portal accessible on mobile devices as well.

Addressing a press conference, Director of Census Operations, IAS officer Cheshta Yadav, said the census in Goa will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will cover houselisting and housing census starting from April 1 in self-enumeration format followed by field survey from April 16 to May 15, while the second phase ” population enumeration ” is scheduled nationwide from February 9 to February 28, 2027.

She said that the digital exercise will be carried out under the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS), making Census 2027 the first of its kind in India.

“The census will include 33 questions, and around 3,086 enumerators will be deployed across Goa,” she said.

In a significant boost to linguistic inclusion, Konkani has been incorporated into the data collection process for the first time. “Konkani is among 16 languages that will be used in the digital database for both self-enumeration and field enumeration, ensuring that people in Goa do not face language barriers,” Yadav added.

Conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948, this will be the eighth census since Independence.

For administrative purposes, Goa has been divided into 26 charges across three districts ” North Goa, South Goa, and Kushavati. Enumerators have already begun training ahead of the exercise.

Officials have appealed to citizens to actively participate in the process and provide accurate information to ensure reliable and comprehensive data collection.
