Residents of Vanelim-Colva have raised serious health concerns after a strong foul smell spread across the area near Green Acres following fish deaths in a nearby stream.

According to residents, the stench has continued for the past five days due to dead catfish lying in the water in a decomposed state. The situation has reportedly worsened, with maggots and worms infesting the area, causing inconvenience and concern among locals.

Alleging inaction by the authorities, residents approached youth leader Warren Alemao seeking intervention. On Thursday, Alemao, along with local residents, inspected the affected stream and found several dead catfish floating in the water. Residents said the delay in desilting and clearing weeds from the nullah had worsened the problem.

Speaking to the media, Alemao said the Water Resources Department would take time to begin the desilting work and assured residents that immediate steps would be taken to provide relief.

“The authorities have already delayed action by passing the responsibility from one department to another. Hence, I have decided to deploy heavy machinery to desilt the nullah and provide immediate relief to the residents,” Alemao said.
