Former bureaucrat Elvis Gomes on Tuesday sought to know the urgency that is forcing the government to install the smart meters in the State.

Saying that the forceful installation of smart meters in a massive Rs 890 crore project is raising serious questions, Gomes demanded to know the urgency behind the project despite resistance from people on the ground.

He said when citizens are clashing over something that’s being imposed on them, it clearly shows a lack of trust and transparency. “What’s even more telling is that the Uttar Pradesh government had to scrap smart meters after facing massive public backlash. If a State like UP can step back after listening to its people, why are others pushing ahead despite growing opposition,” he demanded to know.
