Locals protest over steep bills at Curchorem electricity office

Residents from Curchorem and nearby areas marched to the office of the electricity department at Curchorem, protesting against the steep rise in electricity bills in recent months and demanding immediate rectification of the issue.

The aggrieved consumers, including small business owners and shopkeepers, questioned department officials over the sudden increase in billing amounts, claiming that the revised bills were beyond their financial capacity.

Protesters alleged that in several cases, electricity charges had doubled or even increased by 150 percent compared to previous months.

One local businessman stated that despite operating only a few appliances such as refrigerators and ice cream freezers, his electricity bill had witnessed an abnormal rise.

He expressed concern that small traders and shopkeepers were being burdened with unexpected expenses, making it difficult to sustain their businesses.

Responding to their complaints, an electricity department official informed them that the billing pattern had changed as per the guidelines of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC).

The official explained that electricity consumption is now being calculated on parameters such as kVAh (Kilo-Volt-Amperes-Hour) instead of only kWh, while factors like demand load and sanctioned load are also being considered.

According to the department, establishments operating motors, refrigeration units and other heavy electrical equipment are being affected due to low power factor, which results in higher billing.

Officials advised commercial consumers and industrial units to install or upgrade capacitors to improve the power factor and reduce electricity charges.

Residents also raised objections over the additional financial burden linked to government-mandated changes such as the proposed installation of smart meters.

They complained that expenses related to documentation, electrical setups and technical diagrams were placing further strain on small business owners and ordinary consumers.

The protesters urged the electricity department to review the new billing system, provide relief to consumers and ensure transparency in the calculation of electricity charges.
