The Curtorim gram sabha on Sunday gave the Panchayat the go-ahead to carry out an assessment of house tax on households and commercial establishments.

At the meeting, chaired by Sarpanch Joaquim Estebeiro, members said the Panchayat should fix the house tax rates only after the assessment is completed.

The Panchayat has appointed a private agency to carry out the house tax assessment in the village. The agency will also assess premises that are leased out to ensure that one month’s rent is paid to the Panchayat.

Meanwhile, gram sabha member J Santan Rodrigues demanded that the Director of Panchayats grant full powers to the gram sabha as per the 73rd Amendment and the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994. He also said that no project should be cleared in the village without prior approval of the gram sabha.
