Chorotsav, an important part of the village’s Shigmotsav celebrations, was observed on Friday in a vibrant and devotional atmosphere. Religious and traditional programmes were held from morning till late at night. Following a public announcement, the ritual began around 8 pm.
As per tradition, eight symbolic “chor” (thieves) take part in the ritual. Of these, four are buried up to their waists and the remaining four up to their heads, creating a striking and symbolic scene. Two “muddayache chor” are also included, keeping the traditional format of the ceremony intact.
The origins of the festival are linked to an old legend. It is believed that the ritual is performed each year as a symbolic act of atonement. Over time, it has become an inseparable part of the village’s cultural identity.
Village elders said the Chorotsav has been observed for hundreds of years without a break. The Shigmotsav festivities in Zarme traditionally begin with Holi, followed by the Chorotsav ritual.
This year, the festival saw a larger-than-expected turnout, leading to minor logistical issues. Villagers assured that better arrangements will be made in future to ensure smooth conduct of the event.
