Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira has criticised the Goa government for what he called “wasteful spending” on beautification projects, while basic infrastructure problems across the State remain unresolved.
Ferreira objected to a proposal by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) to spend Rs 5.7 crore on painting and beautification work at the Atal Setu bridge.
The project includes cleaning the bridge surface, applying a protective elastomeric coating on the piers and pier caps, and carrying out artistic painting to improve its appearance.
Calling the plan “shocking”, Ferreira said public money should instead be used for essential needs such as road repairs, and improving electricity and water supply.
Referring to the Prime Minister’s appeal for austerity during tough economic times, he said the government’s spending priorities were wrong.
“The government needs to stop this tender and focus on basic infrastructure development,” Ferreira said.
He also alleged that the State government spends large amounts on high-profile events while ignoring local needs.
He cited the Formula 4 racing event, claiming that nearly Rs 57 crore was spent overnight, and said roads were quickly repaired ahead of the FIDE Chess Championship to avoid embarrassment in front of visitors and participants.
“We are waiting for our roads to be repaired. Files keep moving for years, and finally we are told there are no funds,” he said.
Ferreira also pointed to the poor condition of the Corjuem bridge, saying its railings are crumbling despite notices, letters, and work orders being issued.
He alleged that only surface-level painting was being done on rusted parts instead of proper repairs.
He further warned of a possible fuel price hike by the end of the month, saying rising costs were already burdening ordinary people. He urged the government to focus on public welfare and infrastructure instead of what he called “entertainment and decoration projects.”
