No injuries were reported, though the incident has raised suspicions of possible foul play.
Fire tenders from Mapusa and Pilerne rushed to the spot after the blaze was reported and managed to contain the flames before they could spread to the remaining cottages in the cluster, officials said.
The firefighting operation lasted over an hour, with personnel battling thick smoke and strong coastal winds that threatened to intensify the blaze.
Two tourists from Mysore who were staying at the resort, along with a staff member present on the premises, managed to escape safely.
Fire service personnel indicated that there were visible signs suggesting attempts to set the property on fire.
“Door mats placed near the entrances of all the cottages appeared to have been deliberately set ablaze. However, the exact cause of the fire will be established after a detailed investigation,” an official said, adding, “Let the police take a call.”
Police have begun inquiries and are examining the scene to ascertain whether the blaze was accidental or an act of arson.
Forensic teams are expected to inspect the site, and statements from staff and nearby residents are being recorded.
The extent of the financial loss is currently being assessed.
Local MLA Michael Lobo, who visited the site later in the day, said there were “tell-tale signs” indicating that someone may have tried to set the cottages on fire.
He also stressed the need for enhanced surveillance in tourist hubs. “Surveillance cameras are the eyes of the police. Authorities should ensure that CCTV cameras are installed at key locations. With proper monitoring, the police will be able to track those involved in criminal activities more effectively,” he said.
