Goa Glorious: Remembering freedom fighter Joachim Dias

F reedom fighter Joachim Dias was born in Cuncolim on May 12, 1920, to Francis Xavier Dias. Earning dual B.A. and LL.B. degrees, his activism began as a student in Castlerock and Belgaum. His legacy is showcased at the Aguad Interactive Museum: Goa “ The Land, The Struggle, The People.

As founder president of the Goan Youth League (1943“1961), co-editor of Gomantak and a GPP founder, he shaped the movement and held meetings, demonstrations and processions to spread political awareness among the masses. He met Gandhi in Pune and Nehru in Delhi, securing a national statement on Goa, alongside Beatris Menezes Bragança. His request to Dr T.B. Cunha regarding “Civil Liberties in Goa” prompted Dr Lohia’s intervention in the Liberation movement. After offering Satyagraha at Chandor, he was arrested, beaten and later abandoned in a jungle. Despite warrants, he led mass demonstrations in Bombay and guided border workers alongside associates like Chandrakant Kakodkar, Pandurang Shirodkar and R.V. Pandit.

Road hot mixing works launched in Malbhat

MARGAO: Public Works Department Minister Digambar Kamat on Monday launched road hot mixing works in Malbhat at an estimated cost of Rs 15 lakh. The Minister launched the works in the presence of local businessmen and residents, who had been demanding the hot mixing of the road for some time. Speaking to the media later, Kamat said the hot mixing works would cover the entire Malbhat area.
