The Goa Cricket Association inaugurated new floodlights at the GCA ground in Porvorim on Friday.
The new floodlights are installed at a cost of Rs 4 crore.
“The lights meet international standards, including those required for IPL matches, and will allow players to train even during evening hours. The newly installed floodlights are designed to support high-quality match telecasts. The required lighting level is 2,500 lux,” said former GCA President Chetan Dessai.
As part of its broader vision to develop the sport, the GCA has already established 20 cricket centres aimed at nurturing budding talent and providing a structured platform for aspiring players.
“This development aligns with the long-term vision of the GCA. With such high-quality floodlighting, players will be better prepared to play international matches, as well as modern formats like One Day and T20 matches, which are increasingly played under lights in domestic tournaments such as the Ranji Trophy and others,” Dessai said.
Dessai added that the association is committed to upgrading facilities, with plans underway to open a state-of-the-art physiotherapy centre and a modern gymnasium to support player development.
“Since the new managing committee took charge, there has been significant progress in infrastructure development. While the previous committee laid the foundation, the current committee has taken considerable efforts to further improve facilities,” Dessai said.
Vinod Phadke, President of Goa Veterans Cricket Association said cricket activity in Goa tends to slow down during the rainy season, which affects player growth. “To address this, the association plans to send young players to other states during the off-season so they can play more matches. Ideally, each player should participate in at least 100 to 150 matches annually to develop their skills effectively,” said Phadke.
The evening also featured noted Bollywood singer Shabir Kumar, who rendered the national anthem before the President’s XI and Secretary’s XI match.
GCA President Mahesh Dessai and Secretary Tulshidas Shetye were among those present.
