MARGAO: Navelim Sporting Club booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Late Franco Gouveia Memorial Football Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Ambelim Sports Club at the DSYA Ground, Colva, on Friday. The tournament is organised by St Anthony Sports Club, Colva.

Navelim gradually emerged as the stronger side and took the lead in the 10th minute through Joyson Couthino, who headed home beautifully to make it 1-0.

Navelim doubled their advantage before the break when Selwin delivered a long pass to Joyson Couthino, who controlled the ball well before finishing past the Ambelim goalkeeper to complete his brace and give his side a comfortable 2-0 lead at halftime.

The second half produced several attacking moments from Ambelim as Cefan Fernandes, Semson Fernandes and Bleston Simoes kept the Navelim defence under pressure. However, the defensive trio of Selwin Gomes, Aden Pereira and Venito Costa stood firm to deny Ambelim any breakthrough until the final whistle.

Joyson Coutinho, who scored both goals for Navelim Sporting Club in the opening half, was awarded the Man of the Match prize by Colva Dy Sarpanch Dylan Rodrigues.
