With less than a week remaining for the Swami Vivekananda U-20 National Football Championship, which is set to kick off on May 9 in Narayanpur, Goa U-20 head coach Pradip Chopdekar has expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and mindset.
Chopdekar, who has spent the past few weeks fine-tuning tactics and building team chemistry, believes his squad is fully ready”both mentally and physically”to begin their campaign strongly.
“I am very happy with how our preparation has gone. The players are mentally and physically ready for this competition,” said Chopdekar. “Every training session has been purposeful, and I can see the hunger and commitment from each and every player.”
The tournament marks Chopdekar’s first major assignment at this level, and he highlighted the importance of unity within the squad. “I always believe team unity, both on and off the field, is very important. When players trust and support each other away from the pitch, it reflects in their performances. I am proud of the togetherness we have built,” he added.
Looking ahead to their opening clash against Punjab on May 12, Chopdekar acknowledged the challenge but remained optimistic. “We know Punjab are a very good side. It won’t be easy, but we are well prepared. I have complete confidence in my players. Our biggest strength is our unity, and we will give everything to make a strong start.”
While keeping tactical details under wraps, the coach promised an exciting brand of football. “I won’t go into specifics about our playing philosophy, but fans will enjoy what they see. We will give our best to make Goa proud.”
The Goa U-20 team began its preparation camp on April 20, receiving strong support from clubs and coaches who released players despite ongoing competitions such as the GPL, U-20, U-18, and First Division leagues.
The camp has maintained a positive atmosphere, with players showing excellent attitude and commitment in training. The squad is being supported by assistant coach Alexander Fernandes, physio Vishwa Usgaokar, and GFA member Francis Nunes.
Chopdekar, who also serves as coach of Dempo SC U-20, said the staff is working on developing a balanced style of play, focusing on attack, defense, and smooth transitions across all areas of the pitch.
He also acknowledged the strength of teams like Punjab, Maharashtra, and Assam, noting their reputation for producing top football talent. Goa, he said, is preparing strategically and will adapt its approach based on match situations.
The coach expressed gratitude to the Goa Football Association for the opportunity, and thanked Dempo Sports Club president Shrinivas Dempo for allowing him to take up the Goa U-20 head coach role.
