Need to strengthen Goa’s Lokayukta Act

The Lokayukta must become more accountable and transparent in its functioning. Beyond addressing corruption, it should actively monitor public authorities to ensure protection of citizen rights and reduction of administrative delays. 

Goa has witnessed scams involving jobs, recruitment, land, and approvals, yet systemic corruption persists without effective punishment mechanisms. Corruption remains a major hurdle for ordinary citizens, eroding trust and fairness. Slogans against corruption sound promising, but when need turns into greed, stronger institutional cleansing is essential.

Every corrupt act has two sides: the bribe-taker who benefits, and the citizen whose future suffers. Unfortunately, these concerns do not appear to be a government priority. The Goa Lokayukta is further constrained by limited powers and resources, undermining its credibility and effectiveness. 

Compared to states like Karnataka and Kerala, Goa’s Lokayukta Act is weak and needs strengthening. To build public confidence, the institution must become more accessible through field inspections, public meetings, discussions, and seminars.
