A stainless steel railing has been installed all around the garden by Margao Municipal Council, a colossal wastage of public funds giving protected places for outsiders and creating more nuisance rather than facilitating movement of daily pedestrians. The openings on the east and west sides are commonly used while those on the north and south sides are rarely used.
The walkway path all along the garden is deserted and becomes a heyday safe haven for loiterers, anti-social elements, labourers and outsiders to use cement benches as rest places, converted to temporary dwellings including sleeping at night and even during the day undisturbed. It has become difficult and embarrassing nowadays to go with children or family or friends on the pathway around the garden, forgetting even to have a small rest on those benches for a while.
It appears the Council had surplus funds and could not find ways to exhaust them and so spent on the stainless steel railings at high cost which will not last for a longer period compared to galvanised iron railings. The Council made an attempt to hike house tax without any need and hence withdrew it instantly. The amount spent is mainly for providing benefit and protection to outsiders at the cost of locals paying tax regularly.
It is unfortunate that apart from those in closed cabins even the local councillors moving around daily are blind to this situation. It is hoped at least the concerned authorities or minister take cognisance of this pathetic condition and free the Municipal garden and make it a respectable place for visiting with family and children.
