Khattar failed to disturb communal harmony

The recent handling of the case involving Gautam Khattar, accused of making derogatory remarks against St Francis Xavier, raises serious concerns. Brought back to Goa from Himachal Pradesh just last week, he was scarcely held in custody and instead shifted between hospitals citing chest pain. Soon after being granted conditional bail on May 2 by the JMFC Vasco court, his health complaints seemed to vanish. What followed was equally troubling. Khattar publicly criticised Goan journalists for not supporting him, while being welcomed with slogans by supporters. Such scenes send a disturbing message. If he truly had conviction in his words, he would have stayed back and faced public scrutiny rather than leaving the state and seeking refuge. It is deeply unfortunate that individuals who insult religious sentiments later attempt to lecture the media and society. Goa has always stood for communal harmony and mutual respect. The media here continues to play a responsible role in informing and uniting people. Goans neither need nor appreciate divisive commentary from outsiders. We value peace, truth, and coexistence, and remain committed to preserving these ideals for future generations.
