The recent hateful remarks against our saint, St Francis Xavier (Goencho Saib), have caused anguish not among Goan Catholics but among people of goodwill everywhere. Faith is sacred and personal, and no individual or group has the right to insult or interfere with another’s beliefs. Such incidents are dangerous because they threaten the peace and harmony that Goa has always upheld. When individuals, outsiders, attempt to provoke communities and create division, their intentions be questioned. Endorsing such conduct in the name of religion weakens our social fabric. The swift action of the Goa Police Crime Branch is welcome. The law must remain firm and impartial in dealing with hate speech, and religion must never be misused to spread hostility. Statements that celebrate victory while using divisive language only deepen mistrust. We do not seek validation for our beliefs. The Catholic community looks to its own spiritual leadership, and mutual respect”not interference”must guide coexistence. This is also a time for introspection. The Church should address concerns like VIP culture during feasts, remembering that all are equal before God. Goa’s unity in diversity must be protected. Justice, restraint, and understanding should prevail.
