The alleged assault on activist Kashinath Shetye at an illegal land-filling site on the outskirts of Panaji city has once again highlighted the dangers faced by citizens who stand up for public causes. Last year, in September, activist Rama Kankonkar was also brutally attacked.
These are not isolated incidents. They reflect the growing risks faced by individuals who challenge illegalities and vested interests. Every time activists are attacked, they come out stronger. Their voices cannot be suppressed. They are often the first to expose encroachments, illegal land filling, destruction of mangroves etc.
In fact in some cases, activists even face difficulties from authorities or police agencies while trying to expose wrongdoing. Goa owes a great deal to its fearless activists. Their dedication reminds us that safeguarding society and the environment is a collective responsibility. Instead of allowing them to fight alone, people must rally behind them and ensure that truth and justice prevail.
