Need to supply LPG through pipeline

There is an acute shortage of LPG stored in cylinders, and the public often tends to panic, which leads to long queues at gas filling stations. The government is reluctant to supply LPG through pipelines due to fears of damage and gas leakage. These LPG pipelines should be laid in designated areas or protected bunkers with reinforced concrete so that any destruction does not affect these vital gas supply lines or interrupt service. High-strength, corrosion-resistant materials such as steel and polyethylene should be used.

Each household should be provided with a gas consumption meter located outside the premises, making it easily accessible to authorities and workers. The old and primitive method of transporting gas through cylinders is gradually becoming obsolete, especially in major urban areas with high-rise buildings, where residents face inconvenience in receiving cylinders on higher floors of their apartments.

Many such residential blocks in large metropolitan cities already have gas pipeline connections. Goa is rapidly urbanising, and the culture of redevelopment is growing with increased F.A.R., which means development is moving predominantly upwards. The old method of LPG transportation through cylinders should give way to a more modern and efficient pipeline delivery system. The risks of cylinder explosions, storage godowns, and transportation by trucks can be minimised, as these methods are becoming increasingly cumbersome. Development should include all-round modernisation, and this is one important step worth considering and implementing.

Heavy punishment should be considered for anyone caught pilfering gas through illegal tapping. Heavy-duty materials should be used in such supply systems, including high-quality copper pipelines and heat-resistant smart meters with long-lasting components. Leak detector systems and emergency shutdown valves should also be installed. Regular inspection and maintenance protocols must be in place. Pressure regulators with relief valves must be installed to ensure gas is supplied safely to households.

Waste water and sewage discharged from unauthorised colonies along the banks of the Yamuna are an added menace. The Delhi government can take a cue from Paris, which undertook an ambitious effort to…
