MARGAO

With peak summer driving up water demand across South Goa, residents are bracing for disruption as taps are set to run dry in several areas due to a planned shutdown of the Selaulim water treatment plant.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has scheduled a shutdown of the 160 MLD Selaulim water treatment plant. Hence , there will be no water supply to the areas of Quepem, Cuncolim, Curtorim, Margao, South Goa coastal belt, Fatorda, Nuvem Cortalim, Dabolim Vasco and Mormugao constituencies on May 5 and 6 and restricted water supply on May 7.

Officials said the shutdown is necessary to address multiple weak points along the old 160 MLD pipeline, which has been prone to inefficiencies.

“The pipeline requires immediate attention at several locations, including Consua in Salcete. We are aiming to complete repair work along the stretch from Selaulim to Margao by May 5 itself. If that is done, water supply to parts of Quepem and Salcete should resume,” a senior PWD official stated.

However, authorities have cautioned that some areas may continue to face disruptions even on May 6. “Repair work is planned at Consua, and due to this, regions such as Majorda, Cansaulim, Velsao and villages extending up to Vasco may not receive water the following day as well if there is a delay in completing the work” the official added.

PWD has issued the extended advisory as a precautionary measure to allow residents sufficient time to store water and make necessary arrangements. Officials emphasized that if all repair works are completed as scheduled on May 5, water supply could be restored to affected areas, including Vasco, by May 6.
