The panchayats of Mauxi, Poriem and Thane in Sattari taluka have been honoured with the prestigious ‘Smart Waste Champion’ award at a workshop on Integrated Dry Waste Management Programme organised by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC).

The award recognises their outstanding efforts in waste management, cleanliness initiatives, and environmental sustainability.

The award ceremony, held at the Municipal Hall in Sanquelim, was graced by dignitaries including Sanquelim Municipal Chairperson Siddhi Prabhu, Dr Geeta Nagvenkar (Member Secretary, Goa State Pollution Control Board), Harish Adconkar (Managing Director, GWMC), Ahona Ghosh (GM Sustainability “ Good & Green, GCPL), and Dr Sachin Tendulkar (CEO, Mineral Foundation of Goa).

On behalf of Mauxi Panchayat, Sarpanch Priti Gaonkar, Deputy Sarpanch Sayaji Sawant, Member Somnath Kale, and Secretary Sarvesh Gaonkar received the award. Safai Mitras Krishna Gaokar, Sunita Gaonkar, and Vaishnavi Gaonkar were also specially felicitated for their dedicated service.

The Panchayat has implemented effective waste segregation practices, cleanliness drives, awareness campaigns, and eco-friendly initiatives, with strong support from local residents.

“This award is a recognition of the collective efforts of our villagers. Waste management is not just the responsibility of the administration; every citizen must participate. We will continue to implement more eco-friendly initiatives in the future,” said Mauxi Sarpanch Priti Gaonkar.

Similarly, Poriem and Thane Panchayats were also honoured for their consistent work in waste segregation, public awareness, reducing plastic usage, and maintaining cleanliness.

“This award is a proud moment for our Panchayat. With the support of villagers, we successfully implemented waste management initiatives. Our aim is to ensure that every household practices waste segregation and adopts an eco-friendly lifestyle,” said Poriem Sarpanch Deepa Naik.

Added Thane Sarpanch Vinayak Gawas: “This recognition reflects the collective efforts of our entire village. Cleanliness should become a habit, not just a campaign. The coordination between Panchayat, sanitation workers, and citizens made this achievement possible.”

During the programme, several institutions and panchayats were honoured under the ‘Smart Waste Champion’ and ‘Plastic to Purpose’ awards.
