BITS Pilani student killed in Zuari Nagar road accident; tanker driver arrested

PANAJI

 A 26-year-old student of BITS Pilani lost his life, while another was grievously injured after their motorcycle rammed into a tanker at Zuari Nagar on Saturday evening.

The accident occurred around 5:15 pm near the IAV Private Limited junction at Upasnagar, Zuari Nagar, under the jurisdiction of Verna Police.

According to Verna police, the accused tanker driver, Pedro Ivo Medeira (66), a resident of Raia, Salcete, was proceeding from Upasnagar towards BITS Pilani when he allegedly took a right turn into a company premises without ensuring that the road was clear.

“At that moment, a TVS motorcycle travelling from BITS Pilani towards Verna, carrying Karan Narasimha Murthy, a resident of Mysore, and Soham Adhikari (26), a resident of Shantinagar, Ponda, collided with the rear left side of the tanker,” police reported 

Both riders sustained grievous injuries and were rushed for medical treatment. However, Karan Narasimha Murthy succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at South District Hospital Margao. The pillion rider, Soham Adhikari, is currently undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital.

Verna Police Station registered a case under Sections 281, 125(b), and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and arrested the accused driver in connection with the fatal accident. He was later released on bail.

The investigation is being carried out by PSI Carey Fernandes under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
