A tragic road accident near the IAV junction at Zuari Nagar claimed the life of a 26-year-old BITS Pilani student and left another critically injured after their motorcycle rammed into a tanker late Saturday evening.

According to information from Verna Police, the incident occurred at around 5:15 pm near the IAV Private Limited junction at Upasnagar, Zuari Nagar, Birla.

The accused tanker driver, Pedro Ivo Medeira (66), a resident of Raia, Salcete, was reportedly driving from Upasnagar towards BITS Pilani. Police said that upon reaching the IAV junction, he took a right turn to enter the company premises without ensuring the safety of oncoming traffic.

At that moment, a TVS motorcycle travelling from BITS Pilani towards Verna, carrying Karan Narasimha Murthy of Mysore and Soham Adhikari (26) of Shantinagar, Ponda -- both students of BITS Pilani -- collided with the rear left side of the tanker.

Both riders sustained grievous injuries in the impact and were rushed for medical treatment. However, Murthy succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at South District Hospital, Margao. The pillion rider, Adhikari, is currently undergoing treatment at GMC Bambolim.

Verna Police have registered a case under Sections 281, 125(b), and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The accused driver, Pedro Ivo Medeira, was arrested in connection with the fatal accident and later released on bail.

The investigation is being carried out by PSI Carey Fernandes of Verna Police Station under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
