Viral garbage dumping row ends in tragedy; student found dead after FIR

PANAJI

An undergraduate college student was found dead on Friday, just hours after Mapusa Police registered an FIR against him in connection with an alleged garbage dumping incident at Gaunswaddo that had sparked outrage on social media. While police suspect it to be a case of suicide, the exact cause of death will be established only after a post-mortem examination.

The incident follows the circulation of a viral video in which local residents confronted the youth over allegedly dumping garbage on a public road in Gaunswaddo. In the footage, a resident is seen questioning the youth and accusing him of littering the village. The individual recording the video also reportedly took the youth’s motorcycle keys and demanded that he clean up the waste allegedly dumped at the site.

“Being a Gaunswaddo resident, you are spreading filth and dirtying the village,” the resident is heard telling the youth in the video.

The youth, however, denied the allegations during the confrontation.

Following the viral video, Mapusa Police registered an FIR against the student for allegedly dumping garbage on a public road.

Later, the student was found dead under circumstances that police suspect may be a case of suicide.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. Police have launched an investigation and are examining all aspects of the case, including whether the viral video, the subsequent public confrontation, or the registration of the FIR may have had any bearing on the incident.
